Ford to Offer Armor Piercing Protection for Police Interceptors

Last week, Ford announced that its Police Interceptor lineup of sedans and utility vehicles will now come with the option of armor-piercing ballistic protection panels. They will be the first factory-equipped, pursuit-rated vehicles in the United States with Department of Justice standard Type IV protection. Though the number of shootouts involving armor-piercing ammunition is low, incidents are unfortunately becoming more common.

"The fact that we design our Police Interceptors around officer feedback is what has made them number one. Officers globally told us they needed protection from armor-piercing ammunition and we added increased ballistic protection to an already great product – that's continuous innovation," said Arie Groeneveld, chief engineer, Ford Police Interceptors.

The Type IV panels are an available option beyond standard ballistic protection. Further evidence of Ford's commitment to officer safety can before in its long list of available features such as a 75-mph rear crash test rating, police-tuned suspensions, police brakes, and steel wheels.
